Recorded from the audience on DAT at 19 Broadway in Fairfax on August 23, 1999. The two reels are mislabeled, so it isn’t certain which is truly Part 1 and which is Part 2 — but one is clean and the other heavily distorted, and the archive keeps them separate here rather than guess.
The main 14-song set comes from the clean tape. Mostly originals, including an early version of “Rugburns” before it found its familiar shape, alongside covers of Steve Poltz’s “Single Life,” Bruce Springsteen’s “Highway Patrolman,” Lefty Frizzell’s “Long Black Veil,” and Paddy Nash’s “Model Family Man.”
A second batch of 7 songs was later recovered from the distorted reel and is kept separate below, labeled “Part 1 (Distorted)” — rough listening in places, but archived rather than lost. It includes an alternate version of “ABC,” another early take of “Rugburns,” and three songs that don’t appear anywhere else in the archive: “Troy,” “The Kiss,” and “Da Da Da (Slave to an Angel).”
Straightforward hand-edits and the usual −20 LUFS normalization throughout; no noise reduction or EQ needed on either tape.
